Perfection is discovered not created.
Ongoing happiness is the ability to notice how everything is always perfect no matter what happens.
Suffering is not noticing everything is perfect now.
Happiness is the skill of noticing what is.
What is, is always perfect.
Suffering is noticing what isn't.
What isn't is rarely if ever perfect.
Noticing requires no effort, so happiness requires no effort.
What requires effort is refraining from effort until it doesn't require effort to refrain from effort.
What is always is and what is, is always perfect.
The only thing that changes in your experience is your ability to notice it more or notice it less based on how much effort or how little effort you apply.
Effort is only useful put towards refraining from effort to the point where effort is no longer helping you refrain from effort.
If we take the adage: you get what you focucus on at face value, it reads: You get what you focus on. Period.
If all you did was focus on what you want, that's all you would get: what you want and nothing else.
The challenge for most of us is not noticing what is, it's the challenge of not focusing on what isn't: all the imagined ideas of what might or could happen rolling in our head.
Where effort can be useful towards happiness is in helping you focus less and less on what's not what you want: (the imagined pictures of what could go wrong) until you can effortlessly notice only or mainly what is happening.
When you only or mainly notice what is happening without your attention being distracted by what isn't happening, you notice that what is happening IS what you want. You notice that what you really wanted all along was to be free from having to focus on and believe in the imaginary pictures in your head of things going wrong and that you have been trying to MAKE things show up in reality in a certain way simply to help yourself feel more secure when that happens. When you recognize you no longer have to focus on and believe those imaginary pictures, what is happening appears like what you want or at least like not a threat to you at all.
What might require some effort at first is refraining from the effort of focusing on and believing what isn't happening until not focusing on and believing what isn't happening doesn't require much or any effort.
From that point, the less effort you engage in, the more noticing what is you experience.
The idea that effort is required to be happy and to have everything you want is the last imaginary separation to notice disappearing between you and continual happiness and the experience of always having everything you want.
The secret to having everything you want is noticing you always do.
This includes everytime you don't notice it and you suffer, because if you're honest, you do want to develop the skill of noting what is when you recognize that's the only way to have what you want, and suffering is part of that process because it shows you when you're not noticing how everything is perfect now, or in other words, it shows you when you're not noticing what is.
So a more accurate version is: The secret to having everything you want is noticing you always do (whether you like it or not). or:
The secret to having everything you want is noticing you always do (whether you notice it or not).
